Labyrinths are not only found in French cathedrals. Some Danish churches also feature—or once featured—labyrinths depicted as fresco paintings.
In four Danish village churches, labyrinths of the Trojaborg type, painted in the 15th century, can still be seen today.
In six other churches, similar labyrinths were discovered but later whitewashed.
Of the seven labyrinths that have been covered over (and are no longer visible), six are located in Jutland, and one is on Funen.
The six Jutlandic labyrinths are all in Central and Eastern Jutland, found in the churches of:
Bryrup, Gylling, Nim, Skørring (2 labyrinths), and Taaning.
The Funen labyrinth is in Vissenbjerg Church.
The reason these ancient "pagan" labyrinths found their way into Christian churches was that, during the Middle Ages, elements of Greek mythology were reinterpreted with Christian symbolism. The labyrinth came to represent the path to God, the Minotaur symbolized the Devil, and Jesus replaced Theseus as the hero who finds the way.
Perhaps these labyrinths refer to the words of John 14:6:
"I am the way, the truth, and the life."
