The Aegean Bronze Age culture on Crete is divided into three main periods: Early Minoan (c. 3000 – c. 2100 BCE), Middle Minoan (c. 2100 – c. 1550 BCE), and Late Minoan (c. 1550 – c. 1100 BCE).
During his excavations in Knossos on Crete (from 1899 onwards), the British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans named this culture after the legendary King Minos.
The period classification is primarily based on changing pottery styles and decorations, from the early simple forms with incised patterns or basic geometric figures in white on a red background, to finer, eggshell-thin shapes featuring stylized plant and animal motifs, and finally to the Late Minoan full-surface decoration with plants and sea creatures.
The excavated palaces date back to the Middle Minoan period. They consist of rows of rooms on one or more floors, grouped around an open courtyard. The numerous rooms and corridors in the palace of Knossos may have given rise to the myth of the Labyrinth. The palaces were richly decorated with frescoes depicting ritual scenes.
The central deity is a female figure depicted holding snakes; the double axe is also one of her attributes. Bull worship is evident in ornamental bull horns and frescoes where acrobats perform graceful leaps over bulls.
The palaces were destroyed around 1450 BCE, likely due to a tsunami caused by the eruption of the Thera volcano (on the island of Santorini).
Greek-speaking Mycenaeans then dominated the local culture until Knossos was again destroyed around 1400 BCE, marking the decline of Crete’s golden age.
